Trying some new Mezcal…

Just been with our Mezcal supplier trying some new mezcals… this brand was particularly delicious.  Really rich smokey reposado and a slightly salty, smooth blanco but with quite a punch as well.  Thinking of bringing them on the menu soon… not easily available in the UK though. Any other suggestions gratefully received!

Chilli Growing Roundup

Few things delight us more than seeing our chilli seed books put to good use – there can never be too many chillies in this world if you ask us. We’ve heard stories about people growing our chillies in their offices, kitchens and greenhouses as well as some strange people even pollinating them to the theme tune of Barry White.

So here’s a roundup of what we found this week whilst chatting on twitter and searching the internet, with a bit of helpful guidance thrown in as well.

@pgl has very kindly put together a demonstration of how to pot on your chillies that Alan Titchmarsh would be proud of.

Meanwhile, @issystweet and @nakedcreativity seem to be well on track. Their chilli seeds are sprouting up next to a strawberry plant. Spicy strawberry sorbet anyone?

We’ve also heard some cries for help from the likes of @bibendumwine whose chilli plant looks a picture of good health, but isn’t yielding any chillies.

If you are having the same problem, we’ve found that pollinating the flowers, gently, with a small paint brush, or if you’re feeling tactile, with the end of your finger works well. But be careful as the flowers sometimes fall off if you’re clumsy. A few days later the flowers will start to wilt and little chillies will emerge. Julio our injured captain returns to work…

After every game of WhiteCity vs Covent Garden football one person has so far always ended up in hosptial..its a (semi-) friendly competition but once a goal is scored..the gloves come off.  Last time round it was the turn of our football captain/ organiser to feel the crunch of white city…he was whisked off to hospital with a fractured ankle…and a week off work!  To add to the pain, white city won once again!

The good news is that finally he has returned and here he is yesterday happy to be back…and still on crutches!

The Covent Garden Real Food Market

I went to see Eat Like a Girl today at Covent Garden market. I had no idea there was a food market on Thursdays…. shows you how much I get out of the buildling!!!

Niamh had a delicious Frank Hederman smoked salmon from Ireland, which she served on her own soda bread (made this morning at some ungodly hour) and pickled cucumbers  -  Perfect on a muggy London summer’s day.

Unfortunately because I had to get back to work, I couldn’t drink the accompanying prosecco from Bisol. But the market is full of treats, I will endeavour to try something from each stall in the oncoming weeks!

Although Niamh’s stall wasn’t connected to the UK Food  Bloggers Association Gastro Geek is hosting a stall in conjunction with them next week. It seems they are a regular occurance.
