In Wahaca

The Graffiti Finals

We had an amazing response to our graffiti competition with over five and a half thousand votes from around the world!  Congratulations to everyone who entered.  In some heats it was really close and we’re sad that only 10 can go through to the finals – but we’re not going to stop at Canary Wharf, so there’ll be more opportunities to decorate Wahaca soon!
Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR.

The finalists are:

Monica Alcazar

Morganic

Jon Erazo

Faye Chadburn

Irony

Luke Brabants

Claroscuro

Alfa

Pikto

Jimi Crayon

It’s now up to the management (feel free to try and influence their decision!) and we hope to announce the overall winner very soon.

It has to be Jimi Crayon to win. His positive outlook on life which reflects in his work is inspiring and I am a collector of his work. The boy is a genius.

Posted by NIA on Sep 9, 2009 at 6:50 pm

I think PIKTO has a brilliant artwork. You can see it all on his website and in the link above. I saw him during the work and really this boy has a GREAT talent. He is trustworthy and I would strongly recommend him…

tha winner is pikto pikto pikto !!!

Posted by Juliano on Sep 10, 2009 at 10:34 am

I recently saw Pikto in action at a live graffiti competition in London and was very impressed with his style and the level of detail he was able to produce. I then found out he recently did a piece at my local coffee shop and went to check it out. It has become a real focus point, producing a interesting graphical piece which suits the shop down to a ‘tea’.
I believe that Pikto and Wahaca would be a fantastic partnership.

UNBIASED PROFESSional OPINION….

Morganic would make you sit through lunch skip work in the afternoon and then invite your mates round for dinner to discuss and decipher whats going on… definitely challenging contemporary and looking through his other stuff a diverse new talent.

Jon Erazo old skool latin pop art meets a visionary comic book hero …. interesting concept to use latin music as inspiration ……and yes this is what we recognise as graffiti but DANG his picture link is set to private so cant see more work.

Luke Brabants Mr Drastik has found some lovely lovely friendly happy chappies living in that crack in the wall ….. im sure he’d find some wicked and exciting stimulation in wahacan mexico.

Jimi Crayon (your trump card) would have me wall watching all through lunch …..bang bang bang that wall would be finished in no time simple and very slikkkkk …. i want some of his work and am gonna get some..…..

Jimi Crayon deserves this the most not just because he is an amazingly talented artist but also because of his genuine passion and love for humanity. This man just give, give, gives and never asks for anything back, a truly inspirational and heroic character.

I feel as though Alfa or Jimi deserve to grace wahaca with their illustrative wizardry. Both artists have amazing individual styles, both of which are ever awe inspiring. I guarantee an amazing show if either of these two were to win! They both have what it takes to rock any wall, whether an amazing restaurant, corporate office or east end squat party. Gwan lads!! D

Posted by Superfertile on Sep 10, 2009 at 10:48 pm

ALFA did work for us. Have to say everytime
we pass a postcard or a business card or
some prints ALFA did for our SS08. We get
the same reaction from young and old, fashion
or art industries, they all ask Who did this?
Followed by ‘It’s fantastic illustration’. With
ALFA we moved into the ART world confidently
and that’s Because he’s the best professional
artist we worked with for some time!!!
You get more with ALFA. His work lasts.

I think alfas work is amazing! I bought a canvas at his last show and I have had so many comments from people saying they love his work. I think his style is the most exciting and relevant to wahaca.

Posted by michelle long on Sep 11, 2009 at 4:11 am

Jon Erazo must win this… I have been a fan of his work for over three years, since first seeing his stuff, and find it truly inspirational and crazily creative. Using Latin music as an inspiration is a great concept which shows through his art….. enough said…. him to win!

Posted by humanbeing on Sep 11, 2009 at 6:58 am

Surely with this being a graffiti competition,

it would be ideal to have some legitimate graffiti artists competing

?????

Posted by leon on Sep 11, 2009 at 9:08 am

Jon Erazo is the only one that actually looks like graffiti!

Posted by Gabrielledee on Sep 11, 2009 at 9:29 am

Alfa for the quirky originality of the work.

Posted by Lottie Campbell on Sep 11, 2009 at 9:37 am

I am the curator for the new Print House Gallery, E8. I have been programming artists for the gallery and we were all over the moon when Alfa confirmed for our Xmas show 2009.‘Rolling With The Punches’ promises an exciting vista of dark thoughts, melancholy and intrigue. Everybody here at the gallery has been amazed by his talent and we think he truely deserves to win this. Best of luck.

I have seen quite a bit of Alfa’s work. His ideas are original and varied. His work is vibrant and so alive.

Posted by Pye on Sep 12, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Alfa’s work really is the most exciting stuff here, and definitely the most truly London to me. Evocative and haunting without being pretentious, always a bit of rye humour in there too. Alfa doesn’t paint what goes in one eye and comes out the other – if he wins, you’ll have something on your wall that people will look at, keep looking at, and will take away with them and think and talk about it. It’s got edge, but it invites people to engage with it. Props to you people for showcasing the best of London talent in your space, for me, Alfa is defo the best of representative of that scene.

CIAROSCURO’S Lachlan Thom is already an important artist of our time.
His conceptual approach to his work equals his incredible talent. He has studied the classics, can create in any medium and brings a provocative voice to any project. His drive and determination is astounding for someone of his age. He has traveled and worked around the world. He sees his work as a means for change and I, and everyone I know who has ever met him, is in awe of his talent. His work ethic trumps all. Give Ciaroscuro the commission and “stand back!” What a great opportunity for all.Marilynn Murray Jensen, Chroma Design

I really like Claroscuro’s contribution, its a winner. It really challenges us to think more human and appeals to the deeper human consciousness of the viewer. It goes the extra mile. brilliant!

Posted by Rolf Gibbs on Sep 13, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Caroscuro left a lasting impression on my heart, mind and soul, shifting me in unexpected ways as I viewed their painted poetry on those once barren walls throughout europe; they altered how I had seen graffiti, bringing a truly human quality to the genre. They have the courage, nay, the balls to make this a piece de resistance which we need in London – get them ‘on’.

Posted by Amalia Rasheed on Sep 14, 2009 at 11:03 am

Klaro Claroscuro! Creativity with something more, that lends to an experience of bonding between diverse social and cultural elements. It’s real!

claroscuro for sure. hard work, talent, creativity, and thoughtfulness. concept+aesthetic. can’t go wrong w/ claroscuro.

Posted by jimbo on Sep 14, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Claroscuro should get the job because they create work that combines aesthetics with purpose. It’s good to see that it addresses social issues and engages the viewer to respond.

With many people that are creating self centered work its refreshing to see something selfless.

Gettem!

CLAROSCURO, these artists display an ultra-contemporary and sophisticated development in street art, the next step after stencil and graffiti culture have long since dried up due to a sheep like mentality and over exposure, give our eyes something new to feast on…vote CLAROSCURO
