Are you hotter than Charlie Dimmock? Spicier than Alan Titchmarch? You could be our Chilli Expert!

Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Red Hot Chilli Peppers

We want to create a series of videos that showcase the joys of growing chillies in a really fun way and we want one of you to be their star. The series will start with a demonstration of how to plant your seeds and then move into the fun and games of pollination, insect defence and harvesting.

We’re looking for someone with a quirky sense of humour and passion for growing chillies to help us make this series.

To apply for this great role simply film yourself (on your mobile phone, digital camera or whatever other format you’ve got access to) doing something that brings your chilli passion to life and upload it to our Facebook page with a short paragraph to convince us that you are the next Don Monty Don.

We will choose our favourite best applicants and set them to a public vote. The winner of which will be rewarded with a Flip video camera, chilli growing tuition, a free meal at Wahaca and the stage to be a star. But don’t delay, get filming now – to fit in with the chilli growing season, we need your entries by 1st June.

I planted my Wahaca serrano seeds several months ago. It took a while but I now have 2 healthy plants ~ 30 cm in height. I keep them on the window ledge in my flat.
I am desperate for some chilli’s. I look every day and am yet to see any flowers. How long does it take? Is there anything I can do to help them along? They have plenty of sun, water etc…

@Cath Great news. We passed your question on to our chilli expert Craig, and here’s what he said.

“There may be several reasons why your chilli plants are not flowering.

Firstly, have you potted the plants on from a small pot into a large pot? From seedling stage, I go from 3″ to 6″ to 9″ pots as the plant grows. If you change pots too early they are slow to come into flower, as they grow to ‘fill the pot’ before concentrating on producing flowers. A general rule of thumb is only pot on the chilli plant when you can see the roots appearing through the drainage holes at the bottom.

Secondly, check the compost/soil you are growing them in. If the soil is loaded with nitrogen, this can cause chilli plants to grow tall and almost forget to fruit.

Lastly, although they are on the window ledge in your flat, they may not be warm enough to produce flowers as normally Chilli plants develop flowers at about 18 degrees Celsius.”

So there you go! Probably the best chilli growing advice available in the country at the moment. We hope this is enough to get your started. If you’re still having trouble, let us know and we’ll get our expert back on the case!
