Mexican Independence Day at Wahaca

Just when you were starting to think that the end of the summer meant an inevitable slow and depressing decline into wintery doom, along comes Mexican Independence Day to cheer us all up. To celebrate, this Friday 16th September, we’re doing what we do best, street food for free! But hold on a split second, surely we can’t give free food to everyone. You’re right. We can’t. That would be madness. It’s only for people in the know. People like you.

This year we’re keeping it nice and simple. All you have to do is bring a picture of a Mexican flag with you to any of our restaurants on Friday 16th and we’ll give any dish from our street food menu for free. It can be a picture that you’ve found on the t’internet and printed out (here’s a couple to get you going), one that you’ve had hand-stitched for you, or one that you’ve drawn with colouring pencils. Anything that vaguely resembles a Mexican flag and you’re in. But, we’re nice people, so please don’t abuse us, it’s one street food dish per person who brings a flag with them. Sorry, you can’t bring 2 flags and get 2 free dishes. That would just be greedy. If you do fancy more than one street food dish (and to be honest, who would blame you), we’ll buy the least expensive one. It’s only fair.

So what are you waiting for, round up your friends and your flags and get yourselves down to Wahaca on Friday.

Celebrate Dia de La Candelaria at Wahaca with free Tamales

Tomorrow, February 2nd, the Dia de la Candelaria festival will be celebrated across Mexico. The tradition goes that whoever is lucky enough to find the small baby Jesus figurine in their Rosca De Reyes cake on the 6th of January should treat all of their friends and family to a meal of tamales on February 2nd. Anyone eagle eyed enough to have read about this year’s winter menu will have spotted that Tommi was hugely excited to be able to put two types of tamales on our menu for the first time. And very delicious they are too!

So, never one to let up the chance to have a bit of a party, tomorrow, we’ll be giving free tamales to anyone who comes in with a small baby Jesus figurine. OK, that might be a bit tricky. We’ll be giving free tamales to anyone who comes in with a picture of a baby Jesus figurine, and funnily enough, we’ve put one just here:

So, if you feel like getting into the Mexican party spirit, print out this picture, and head over to Wahaca any time tomorrow and get your tamales on!

Here’s some Ts and Cs:
One free tamale dish offered per printed picture, and no more than one per customer.
Offer only valid during restaurant opening times on Februrary 2nd 2011.
Anyone found not having fun may be evicted from the restaurant at any time, or asked to stand in the corner with a bag on their head, it’s a party after all.

Watch out for our Facebook fans table, coming soon

We love the friendly bunch we’ve managed to gather together on Facebook, and we think that they need rewarding every now and again for helping us sleep well at night, safe in the knowledge that there are a few people out there that love us dearly.

So, we came up with the idea of the facebook fans table. “But how does it work?” we hear you ask. Well, every now and again we are going to offer up a table in our Covent Garden restaurant for our facebook fans to use as their own – to host a dinner for their friends who haven’t been to Wahaca before. They simply tell us what they want to eat and drink from our menu, who they want to bring with them and why (all in 420 characters). After a scientific selection process we choose which group we like best, and we give them exactly what they’ve asked for at 7.30pm that very evening. Free!

Here’s an example of what we’d go for to whet your appetite:
4 hibiscus margaritas with Scratchings & Guac. Then a selection of street food: Pork &steak tacos (mmm), savoy &pasilla taquito, 2 pork tortas, MSC mackerel tostada & huitlacoche quesadilla. With a round of Pacificos. Churros with cajeta to finish (why not)! We’d invite our pals @diego luna, @salma hayek, @benicio del toro & @gabriel orozco because we’d like to show them what Mexican food in London is all about.

If you put an @ immediately before your friends names, clever old facebook will notify them that they’ve been tagged in your post and they’ll know to keep their eyes peeled to see if they’ve won and to cancel all other dinner plans that evening.

So, if you’re not a fan already, you better head over to www.facebook.com/wahaca immediately and click ‘like’. Then you’ve got all weekend to dream up your perfect menu and think which 4 friends would most appreciate joining you as your guests for the evening, and then you never know we might just be offering up our first facebook table on Monday evening at 7.30pm. (That’s a big hint… In fact… What the hell? We are going to be offering up our first facebook table on Monday evening at 7.30pm, so make sure you look out for our post to announce it at some point on Monday morning).

Good luck!

Let us help you grow your mo. 2010

There’s no denying it, Mexican’s have the best moustaches in the world, but after months of experimentation on the humble British upper lip, we’re delighted to announce that help is on hand for all those struggling to muster more lip-growth than a 16 year old boy. We can exclusively reveal that burritos make your mo grow.

That’s why, to show our support for those taking part in this year’s charity moustache growing campaign – Movember – we’re offering every fundraiser a free burrito from our Canary Wharf takeaway each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in November.

To claim your free burrito (and yes you can come back every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday if you want) you just need to come in to our takeaway in Wahaca Canary Wharf, showing us your hairy lip and a print out of your mo-space page to prove you’re a genuine mo-brother or mo-sister.

There are 4 burritos to choose from, all of them tasting like individually wrapped bundles of heaven. You can choose from a choice of fillings – British steak, slow cooked pork, free range chicken tinga and seasonal vegetables. These are lovingly combined with green rice, cheese, crunchy cabbage and salsas and then toasted for a few minutes on the grill to give them a great combo of crunch and melt in the mouth yumminess. You might have noticed we’re pretty keen on them.

So if you’re doing your bit and donating your face to Movember this year, then please do come on down to the Canary Wharf and let us give your lip a welcome boost. If you want to find out more about Movember and the great work they do to help raise money for The Prostate Cancer Charity, then check out their website.
